Born
in Kerry, in the South West of Ireland, Eilís (pronuonced Alish)
was 7th in a family of eight children of two schoolteachers, Caoimhín and
Edna Kennedy ( Ó Cinnéide). Her house was a musical one and a family who
loved singing and spoke Gaelic and English fluently.
She
learned music in school and in Siamsa, an organisation involved in the
teaching and performance of Irish music, song and dance. Eilís has been
playing music and singing for all of her life, and more recently, recorded
a CD entitled “Time To Sail”.
This
CD has received rave reviews from The Irish Times, Irish Music Magazine,
Froots magazine and Hotpress, but it is hearing her live that really
captures peoples hearts.
She
sings in both Gaelic and in English.
Eilís
is also a high school teacher. She also performs weekly in St James Church
Folk Concert series in Dingle during the summer. She toured in the USA
with the Philips – Coulter Ensemble in March 2000, leading to
collaboration with William Coulter and Barry Phillips on her CD.
She
has recently returned from a major tour of Taiwan with the same group.
They performed in concert halls and Cultural Centres in all of the major
cities of Taiwan including the beautiful 2000 plus seater National Concert
Hall in Taipei.
She
is very involved in cultural activities in her community as part of a
Choral group who sing “Sean Nós “ or traditional Gaelic songs, and,
this year she is performing with “ Aisteóirí Bhréannain” a Gaelic
– speaking Drama group.
Eilís
lives
in West Kerry surrounded by beautiful scenery, where anyone would
be inspired to make music!

Kennedy is currently recording her second album.

is also a featured artist on the best selling album ’Global Women’.

Vocalist of the Year - Eilis Kennedy
This Dingle, Co. Kerry singer has won this Award from us before. Small
wonder. Her brand, brand new album made it to our desk just in time for
this year's Awards. The new one is entitled, One Sweet Kiss. What a great
title, because that is what the album is itself. A full, modern take on
the tradition, at the same time featuring some gorgeous sean nos singing.
There is no better singer in the tradition. Nor a nicer one. Eilis' voice
is a universal gift, accessible to all. There are great songs here, many
with a sea flavor, as to be expected from Dingle. Boat races, whaling,
broken hearts, found loves----epochs we tells 'ya! Such wonderful side
musicians are here, too. Who wouldn't want to be asked to play on the
album? Eilis is just so special on so many levels. We have often remarked
here about how hard it is to put into words what the ear hears. In the
case of Eilis Kennedy, just close your eyes, open your heart , and think
of the perfect voice for the music. There she is.
